Puppetry in Dance
Puppetry is all about movement, from engineering mechanisms that make joints bend and wings fold, to giving the puppets a way to come alive, but this project took that idea a step further. This dance piece, choreographed for my school’s 2026 spring dance show, allowed me to explore the different ways in which puppets and puppeteers can bring life and creativity to the stage and allowed me to share my work with new audiences and teach my fellow dancers the art of puppetry.
The idea for this project started with my Chemistry Condor design. I loved the idea of using old binders for the bird ‘s body since it reminded me of opening a book and unfolding entire stories, or in this case, wings. The condor gave me a previous, well-tested design that I could reuse, but despite that fact, I still learned a great deal from this project. Not only did I learn how to choreograph a dance piece, but I also gained experience teaching others elements of both dance and puppetry.
